MORE than 1,000 students from St Therese Catholic Primary School are prepared to celebrate the World Teachers’ Day in Port Moresby.
Grade 5 teacher Cathy Nukunj told The National that while Oct 5 was the designated day, schools in the nation’s capital would celebrate teachers today.
She said everyone, especially students and parents, needed to take time to remember, appreciate, honour and recognise the efforts of teachers in building the nation and human resource of the country.
“Out from teachers comes all professions; without a teacher, a person cannot be a lawyer, doctor, an engineer be in other professions,” Nukunj said.
Nukunj said the day was supposed to be observed on Tuesday, but it was in the mid-week, so it was moved forward to today.
Nukunj said the theme for World Teachers’ Day this year was “History, significance and all you need to know”.
She said students would observe the day by showing appreciation to their teachers through gift cards, poems, songs and presents.
Nukunj said teachers were special people who played a crucial role in society and the Government needed to recognise them by improving their pay and conditions.
She said teachers who taught in remote schools sacrificed a lot to teach young children because they cared for their education and wanted to make a difference in their lives.
Nukunj said teachers did not earn much, but gave their best.
