TEACHERS are a group of people that are overworked and survive with less pay, but are committed to their vocation which is producing the nation’s human resource, a senior public servant says.
Tambul-Nebilyer education adviser Stanley Karu made the remarks during World Teachers’ Day, which was observed by staff of St Mary’s Ulga Primary School in Western Highlands on Tuesday.
Karu said teachers deserved the best because they were pillars of society and nation builders.
He said staff of the Nebilyer school celebrated the day and honoured the hard work and dedication they and their fellow teachers around the country had put into their jobs.
Karu said teachers played an important role in developing the next professionals and leaders of the country.
He commended teachers for their loyalty to the profession.
Karu also commended the teachers for the love for their profession and the young pupils under their care.
Karu said the teaching profession was not the best paying and had at times trying conditions but their work could never be underestimated or downplayed.
Teachers Service Commission Highlands region representative Basil Murian shared the sentiments.
He said without teachers, this nation would not survive.
“Credit needs to be given where it is due,” Murian said.
He thanked the teachers and the board of St Mary’s Ulga Primary School for celebrating the day successfully.
Head teacher James Lyandao said teachers at Ulga Primary decided to mark the day as it was a worthwhile recognition
He said education was the backbone of any country and key people who implemented this vision were teachers.
