WASU Secondary School deputy principal administration Isaac Dambui was robbed of K150,638 in school fees, teacher’s resumption of duty summary sheets and a record of teacher appointments in Lae.
Lae police said the incident occurred while Dambui was in a car driving out of the Lutheran Shipping Services (LSS) premises along Voco Point Rd at 4.45pm last Saturday.
Police said the two Armsec Security guards protecting the company nor the company’s management called the police toll free number (7090 3300) for assistance.
Instead police noticed a speeding car at 2-Mile and responded.
Lae acting Met Supt Chief Insp Kiweri Kesembi confirmed that four men armed with homemade guns and a bush knife held the LSS operations manager Markee Saranduo while he was driving out with Dambui and the ship captain.
The robbers drove away in the vehicle after forcing the three men out.
Other items stolen included K500 cash, a bank card and two grade 12 certificates.
Insp Kesembi said the main suspect Rosang Basuk from Yandu village, Timbe in Kabwum is known for string of crimes.
Basuk was allegedly involved in robbing former Wasu Secondary principal Lupain Philips of K150,000 in 2016 and a killing in West Taraka.
“Basuk is known to police that are investigating the case,” Kesembi said.
Several attempts to reach Morobe provincial education programme adviser Keith Tangui were unsuccessful.
Provincial education minister and Sialum LLG president Bobby Tobby condemned the robbery and urged police to investigate it thoroughly and bring those behind the crime to justice.
Tobby said he would present a report to the Morobe executive council to see how they could assist.

  • When moving such larger amount of money from a rural area like such to a bank exposes public servant(Departmental Heads) to the risk of robbery nowadays.
Where it is not reasonably practicable to use Police escorts, or a security service to transport cash to deposit takings. Change the procedures(another option) for transferring cash often including routes, times, schedules, the amounts transferred and the vehicle
used for the transfer. Avoid banking alone and rotate the task so it is not always the
same person visiting the bank. This is the second time for a principal of the same school to be held up with approximately the same amount and a couple of kina. Liaise with the police from Sialum/Gagidu/Lae Metro through the office of Morobe’s PPC so that he too can be kept in the triangle.
*otherwise might be and inside job though*
