Schools charging fees against govt policy, says Kombra

SCHOOL charging project fees are going against the government’s free education policy, says Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra.
Kombra was responding to Sumkar MP Chris Nangoi who had enquired about a school charging huge sums of money as project fees.
Parents had contacted Nangoi last week to do something about the fees the Karkar Secondary School was charging.
It was charging K600 for continuing students and K700 for new ones.
Kombra said schools were not allowed to charge fees. Government officials will investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, the Gaubin Lutheran community health workers’ school principal Lengi Derring said student intake this year would be reduced from 45 to 30 because of the lack of funding.
Derring said government funding for the school had been cut back by 75 per cent, which they all used by last October.
He said the student mess ran out of food supply. Staff members had to buy food for the students.
“My appeal to the Government is to give us the clear indication on whether the 75 per cent cut would continue so that we can adjust how to manage the school,” he said.

  • The schools are prone to charging project fees because schools only receive 40% of TFF which is not enough. The boarding secondary schools spend so much money in the mess leaving other areas unattended or little attention is given. As such boarding schools will be forced become day schools and enrollment will be ver low as students will have no relatives nearby to live and come to school. However, if the full TFF is sent then schools will function normal without charging project fees. I think the government is not addressing problems but adding fuel to the burning fire by NOT asking schools to collect project fees. Secretary please advise based on real issues not by imagination. Thanks
