PREPARATIONS for the 2017 Southern Regional Athletic Championships in Port Moresby from Sept 29-30 have started.
The host association, Port Moresby Athletic Association are planning to stage the event at the Sir John Guise Stadium.
POMAA president John Gitiri said it would be the fourth regional championships in five years after a revival in 2013.
He said last year’s championships was cancelled due to lack of funds.
The three-day championships are expected to attract teams from NCD, Central, Gulf and hopefully Northern provinces.
It is anticipated that some schools in the nation’s capital will also field their school athletic teams at the championships.
The host association is now calling on corporate sponsors, individuals and the friends of athletics to come forward to support the championships.
Gitiri said teams and athletes could register through Nabase Duaba on 72117092 or email him on [email protected].
Teams and athlete registration must be done before Sept 15.
An entry fee of K300 will be charged and it must be deposited into the Port Moresby Athletic Association account by Sept 10.
No competition fee will be charged on individual athletes.
The divisions to be contested during the championships will be Under-14s, U16s, U18s and open for both male and female athletes.
Gitiri advised athletes to take necessary information regarding the events they are competing in as well as their date of birth.
Gitiri said the U14s and U16s would be participating in limited events: U14 – 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump; U16 – 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, long jump, high jump and throw events. The U18 and open division will contest all sprints, the middle and the long distance and the throwing and jumping field events.
For relay events, the U16 and U14 would contest the medley while the U18 and open would contest both the 4x100m and 4x400m events.
