SACKED University of Technology Vice-Chancellor Dr Albert Schram, says he presented his academic credentials in February 2015 to the university Registrar – “which she misplaced”.
The credentials is at the centre of the controversy surrounding his sacking by the council last week.
When his contract renewal came up in 2015, he was told to produce a copy of his academic credentials.
“I complied with council’s request in 2015 upon my contract renewal to produce a certified copy of my degree paper,” he told The National.
“I sent an email – with a copy to the registrar and deputy vice-chancellor – on Jan 13, 2015, to the university (European University Institute) for a certified copy of the original to be sent to Lae and Cairns, which they did. And I have already submitted the key evidence.
“I received an email from the deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Renagi on Jan 23 (2018) to stay away from the office. My request to the Registrar to access a copy of my certified doctorate (in my office) was not answered.”
On the overseas leave he had been taking, Dr Schram admitted that he had been travelling six months a year since 2014 – combining two months of annual leave and four months of duty travel.
He said his travel expenses were paid for by the discretionary fund allocated to the vice-chancellor. It was approved by the university council and had never exceeded his budget.
“I have receipts of all my expenditures,” he said.
“All the other allegations have to do with management matters, and they should be part of an annual performance review.
“They could have let me know and say: VC you forgot to do this. Or we want you to do more on that, and a bit less that. They later admitted not telling me that.”
Dr Schram also questioned why the 21 allegations made against him last month were never mentioned in his performance review on Aug 26, 2016.
“I was very surprised that all the allegations are being brought up now. And now I have been given seven days to vacate my house,” he said.
