Hela Wigmen chairman Andy Hetra has been asked to step down before the start of the 2018 Digicel Cup competition.
The call for his removal was made known in a media conference over the weekend in Port Moresby.
Former Wigmen players Alfie Johns, Obert Ondale, Joseph Omai and Hame Laki wanted Hetra removed from the post he has held for the past five years.
“We have all joined forces to remove Hetra from his role as chairman of the team because he has lacked quality leadership. He has made unwise decisions that have contributed to the downfall of the team,” Johns claimed.
“One thing we are very upset about with his management is the selection of players in the team.
“Players in the team were selected from outside the province when we have three leagues in the province sanctioned by PNGRFL which are Tari, Komo-Margarima and Koroba-Kopiago.
“There was no trial match held to select the players and that has caused frustrations amongst the leagues in the province. There was no proper development of players in the province.
“Hetra lacked strategic planning for the funds he received for the team from the Hela provincial government, ExxonMobil and Kroton and we are questioning the use of the money since there was no financial acquittals to date.
“We are calling on the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League, local MPs and the community in the province to back us regarding the issue.”
Hetra could not be reached for comment, however, a close associate to Hetra said he would respond in due course.
