Sea-bed mining

Letters

I READ with interest on what Nautilus Mineral on Solwara 1 is doing and the New Ireland people are expecting with a new door opened.
What kind of new door opened you talking about?
As educated Papua New Guinean elites and engineers we know that the sea-bed mining project in New Ireland and PNG is a testing project for the world to see the results. From my intrinsic thinking and analysis, I believe strongly that, the sea-bed mining will definitely-bring about long-term environmental destruction both under and above the sea and separate out to the land.
This conclusion doesn’t require a rocket scientist to arrive at.
It only requires basic science knowledge and seeing what’s happening around the globe.
You got to find the answers to all the “W” questions, and the “H” question; why, when who, what, and how?
May I kindly ask the Institute of Engineers PNG (IEPNG) to wake up and advise the New Ireland people, the governor and the administration please?
If there are people still having interest to accept the sea-bed mining, can you please explain and discuss thoroughly the answers to the questions that will surely arise and guarantee yourselves that if any serious environmental problems occur in the future, you will be liable and meet all cost of destructions to the environment.
Where in the world have you seen a sea-bed mining, please tell us and the experiences you guys have.
This point is another one growing again, the other one some people still supporting is the proposed removal of outcome-based education system.
There are people who still can not think about the root causes and consequences; I believe people may as well go back to classroom and learn – please don’t think about how much money and infrastructure and whatever has been already spend as a cornerstone to continue with projects.
It was a bad decision made initially so get rid of all projects that will surely affect Papua New Guineans into the future – be careful with people who support this kind of projects.
