IT has been suggested at a stakeholder consultative workshop for the extractive sector that the State needs an independent monitoring body.
Stakeholder coordinator for the PNG Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Oliver Maingu said it was suggested that the State should not depend only on data information reported by developers.
The suggestion was for an independent mechanism to monitor the extraction of minerals, and verifying export data production before leaving the port.
Maingu said issues highlighted included infrastructure tax credit (ITC) and development grants not reaching districts and landowners. PNG Extractive Industries Transparency deputy head Chris Tabel said this was debatable because there were existing entities responsible for monitoring.
