THE Abau District Council of Women will host a three-day summit that aims to encourage women to be self-reliant.

The summit, from today is organised by the Abau district and supported by Abau MP Sir Puka Temu.

The theme of the summit is “Self-reliant development for rural women” and it is at Gavuone village, Central.

The meeting will discuss issues affecting women, especially at the rural level and look at their participation in the labour force participation through agriculture, involvement in training programmes, nutritional status, education and decision-making.

Council president Gennie Kapigeno said rural women had a high degree of participation in social activities.

But Kapigeno said they lacked the knowledge of those rights and how they could fully exercise those rights.

“There are many implications affecting the development of rural women, this summit will discuss how women in rural areas can become self-directing individuals or groups,” she said.

“It will identify programmes to ease the burden of their traditional roles so that more time is created for their involvement in social and economic development activities.”

Kapigeno invited women from other districts to take part.

The summit will allow the participants to discuss ways on how they could help implement government policies.
