SEPIK Rugby League received a K30,000 sponsorship from Agmark Group of Companies last week for the next month’s Agmark Nines rugby league tournament in Wewak.
It is the biggest offseason nines tournament which is usually hosted in Buka and Kokopo.
This will be the tournament’s second year in East Sepik.
League project manager Bradley Simon told The National yesterday that the Nov 5-6 tournament had attracted teams from across the country and they were expecting 20 sides to compete at Wewak’s Pora Oval.
“With the current Coronavirus measures in place, we hope they don’t affect our tournament dates,” he said.
“But we will ensure that the Niupela Pasin protocols are followed.
“We will have everything in place to protect people during the two-day event.
“We will stand with the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League to encourage everyone to get vaccinated.
“But it won’t apply to our event as ‘no jab, no game’.
“We won’t force people to get vaccinated, but we will apply necessary measures for all teams comply and enjoy the event. Being a former Gurias player myself, it has always been my dream to make sure Sepik youths play against the best of the country.
“Agmark Nines is one of the big offseason tournaments.
“The aim of the tournament is to showcase our talents in Sepik as there will also be scouts and Digicel Cup coaches recruiting players for their 2022 squads.”
