MOROBE’S MPs are donating in cash and kind to sustain Angau Memorial Hospital’s kitchen to ensure sick patients have enough food during the Covid-19 state of emergency (SOE) 14-day lockdown.
Yesterday, Huon Gulf MP Ross Seymour, his wife Marie, district chief executive officer Moses Wanga and staff delivered three truckloads of fresh vegetables and fruits including bananas, taros and sugar cane to the hospital.
Seymour’s contribution came a day after Lae MP John Rosso and the Lae Yacht Club donated a marlin fish weighing 104kg and a shark weighing 54kg to the hospital’s kitchen which was facilitated by director medical services Dr Lincoln Menda on Sunday.
Seymour said the Covid-19 SOE had affected roadside markets along the highway from Yalu-Rumion. “The cash flow avenues for our local mothers, women and wives, young ladies and even men is deeply affected,” he said.
“As such, my wife and I decided to buy vegetables and fruits including taro, banana etc…from sellers and deliver to our vulnerable people in the hospital to ensure they have an ample diet to get well soon.
“In a sense, we’re helping both our local mothers and bringing food to feed our sick patients that are vulnerable at this moment including our tireless health workers.”
Seymour said he would buy more fresh food and fruits on Saturday for inmates at Buimo Jail.
“I understand that due to the recent mass escape in Buimo, visiting was restricted,” he said.
“However, in such critical times, prisoners need food because markets are closed while shops have scaled back services.”
