THE Rabaul Coastal Shipping will manage the operations of a new vessel belonging to the Pomio people of East New Britain
MV Pomio is expected to start sailing at the end of this month (Nov 30) under Rabaul Coastal Shipping and in consultation with the district business arm Pomio Development Corporation (PDC).
Managing director Fabian Chow explained to the people how the company would manage the operations of the vessel at the commissioning ceremony on Monday.
“I am happy to work with the district authority and the people of Pomio to manage this vessel for you.”
Chow said the vessel would be a great help to the people and commended the district authority for a great achievements.
“Your visionary MP Elias Kapavore with his authority members realise the hardship you have faced over the years in terms of transporting your fresh produce and cash crops to markets,” he said.
“I need your support to help my company to manage the operations of MV Pomio smoothly so it can provide a better service.”
MV Pomio will service the Rabaul Port to the coasts of Pomio through to Kandrian-Gloucester in West New Britain and to Lae in Morobe.
Pomio administrator Peter Peniat said there were additional fees paid by the district development authority.
This was because the vessel was purchased during the Covid-19 pandemic, resulting in the total figure exceeding K5 million which was exclusive of the insurance fee.
Peniat said the authority had to pay for anchorage in South Korea and Cebu in the Philippines.
