TEAM PNG’s shooters for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast are all first-timers and are set to participate in the event.
Shooting will see three athletes represent the country, Pacific Games gold medallist Tania Mairi will compete in the 10-metre pistol event, and Daniel Wanma and Angus Donald will compete in the trap event.
Mairi told The National yesterday that the trio were first-timers at the Commonwealth Games and their aim was to soak in the experience. She said preparations were promising ahead of the event next month.
Coached by Peter Leahy in Port Moresby, brushing up on their skills before they depart for Brisbane on Wednesday next week.
“We had good preparations. We attended a few international events in the lead up to the games, so we are looking forward to travelling,” Mairi said.
“The venue for shooting is in Brisbane, but the rest of the games will be held on the Gold Coast. It doesn’t matter where we are competing as we are focused on doing our best for the country.
“We didn’t take part in the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but I think we had some representative in the previous games.
“It’s going to be very competitive going up against the best shooters from all around the world.
“Daniel and Angus are also doing well at the moment and this is also going to be their first Commonwealth Games so we’re all going to do our best.”
