Short notice on school closure, says Lora

SOME students in Port Moresby who turned up at school yesterday unaware of the 14-day closure, were told to return home.
Secretary of the National Capital District Education Services Sam Lora said the Government should have given school ample warning before announcing the closure.
“We anticipated that the news should come in later so we could have prepared for the closing. The announcement yesterday (Monday) caught us off-guard,” Lora said.
He said schools were informed yesterday to send students home.
“I have sent a message to all the school heads and principals to maintain learning and teaching,” he said.
“They will advise their teachers to provide lessons online for students (during the closure).”
He advised schools to use their online learning platforms to keep students and parents on track and prepare materials for learning.
Lora said parents must be responsible for their children’s education as the use of the internet could be expensive.
“If there is a need be for teachers to supply materials and lessons for students, parents are required to pick them from the schools,” he said.
