THE Solomon Islands grabbed their first win of the Oceania Rugby Cup with a 61-7 defeat of Nauru at the PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby yesterday.
The Solomon Islanders posted 11 tries in a one-sided affair.
Timo Sanga provided speed for his side to spread out Nauru’s defence and sliced his way in for a hat-trick.
Nauru skipper Damon Adeang scored his side’s only try as his counterpart Paul Tema proved his worth with a dominating performance to help the Solomon Islands to a 30-7 halftime lead.
Despite the losing margin, Nauru braved the heat to put on a spirited show to test the Solomon Islanders in every play.
“We have a lot of respect for Nauru, they’re really physical and really big and they brought the challenge to us,” Tema said.
“We had a lot of areas to work on from the first game and I believe we played our style of rugby against Nauru.”
Meanwhile, Nauru head coach Dominic Tabuna has taken the second match as a learning experience which he and his side intend to work on when they return to their home country.
“All in all, it’s a learning experience for us and it’s the second game for us as a national side so hopefully we can keep improving.”
