Sia ready to serve EHP

Letters

THE decision made by Eastern Highlanders in voting philanthropist Simon Sia into office as their governor is welcomed by many, even those from outside the province.
Sia is a very unique human being possessing a heart that is unlike other naturalised citizens.
I watched this man for years and always hoped the people of Eastern Highlands would vote him into office.
He contested the last two elections (2012 and 2017) and was among the top five candidates but he didn’t give up.
These are the reasons why I say Sia is a special human being.
Firstly, I am yet to see a naturalised citizen anywhere in PNG using the proceeds of his business to fund a local sporting team or help local communities, schools, health centres, churches, students, patients and youths.
Sia used his personal money in sponsorship the Goroka Lahahnis for 17 consecutive years with well over K30 million so far.
That is a lot of money.
No expatriate or local businessman would dare spend such an amount of money.
Next, I admire his personality and character because though he was not occupying a public office, his door was always open for any person to go in to see him.
Also, at times, he leaves his comfort zone and with the help of porters, go on a trekking trips to remote parts of Eastern Highlands.
He does that to see how places look like and how people live and what the need.
His continuous philanthropy earned him the name tag “Mr Generosity”.
Finally, one very interesting remark made by Sia in an interview was: “The people of Eastern Highlands must understand that I’m not contesting with the intention to get money or to become rich.
“I have wealth and money; all I ask of you is the political mandate so I can serve you.”
For the people of Eastern Highlands, you have done your part and spoken through the ballots.
Let’s hope Sia will not let Eastern Highlands down.
There is a feeling that a wind of change is blowing towards the east.
Congratulations to the people of Eastern Highlands and the newly elected governor.
Job well done!
