NEW Cricket Papua New Guinea general manager Tony Naidu and game development manager Margaret Sibona visited Lae Cricket Association and had a productive meeting recently.
The association has a proud history with former and current PNG Barramundis (national men’s team players) and Lewas (women) originating from country’s second-largest city.
Naidu said he was moved by the association’s passion.
“It was an absolute honour and privilege to learn about the proud history of cricket in this region from former Barra and association life member Kila Vuivagi,” he said.
The stories from the historic 1982 achievement in England, where our boys beat Bangladesh — among others — to finish third in the International Cricket Council tournament, were great to hear.
“The pride that everyone has in the Kumul Petroleum PNG Barramundis playing in the Twenty20 World Cup this year shows the depth of the love for the game and this country that exists here.”
Association president Ken Ila gave an update during the meeting on how they were still able to field a new team in their competition and had plans to launch a women’s initiative despite Coronavirus restrictions.
