SOCCER followers will have a glimpse of top-quality football when the cream of football talents in the country clash at Papua New Guinea Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday.
The players will vie for a spot in the final national men’s squad.
The much-anticipated clash of the two training groups will come after week-long training camps in Lae and Port Moresby. The camps started yesterday and would end after the match.
PNG Football Association technical boss Paul Isorua said the training programme, including the match, would help with finalising squad.
He said this was in preparation for the 2022 Qatar World Cup Oceania Football Confederation qualifiers scheduled for January and February next year. Isorua said all players should converge in Port Moresby on Thursday, whereby two teams, Red and Gold, would be named for the match.
He said all the players in camp had good fitness as a result of competing in the current National Soccer League season.
“This is a big advantage towards the team’s preparation as player fitness is key,” Isorua said. He said despite finalising the squad, their options would remain open for omissions and inclusions, depending on on-field performances and off-field conduct.
Coaches Bob Morris, Samson Steven, Erickson Komeng, Nathan Vincent and Godfrey Baniau are overseeing training with support from technical officers Harrison Kamake and Margaret Aka. The association has approved for spectators to attend the match with tickets selling at K10 for the grand stand and K5 for the outer stand.
The match will kick off at 3pm with EMTV broadcasting the match live.
After the programme, players will be released back to their clubs next week.
