THE Lihir Rugby Football League (LRFL) Association in New Ireland over the weekend introduced its women’s division into competition with three clubs debuting teams for its first women’s matches on the island.
League patron Jonathan Baul said the three sides included the Marahun Eagles, Kul Tigers and Potz Tribes as their first for the competition with the league determined to expand its reach for women in Lihir.
“Playing sports is something that must include every person in the community and this is something that can bring everyone together,” he said.
“We are working towards creating equal opportunities for our women and breaking barriers to open up the competition to our women. Lihir Rugby Football league is changing and its clubs are eager to play and develop rugby league,” Baul said.
The first match of the women’s division saw the Marahun Eagles beat the Potz Tribes 10-4 while Kul Tigers were on the bye.
Baul also called on local businesses on the island to join the league’s efforts in supporting its youth.
“Business houses or contractors in Lihir town are now kindly asked to help in a little way in supporting Lihir rugby league.
“We have so many business houses in Lihir town where gold is dug and developed like in other centres of the country and we would greatly appreciate any support to go towards helping the league.”
