NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan is keen to finish off projects the provincial government initiated five years ago before he retires from politics.
Speaking during the 22nd provincial assembly meeting last Tuesday, Sir Julius said:  “This may be my last go round. These five years may be the last time I will serve the people of Papua New Guinea, the people of New Ireland.
“In a way that is sad, but it is also exciting. Exciting because now we have a chance to finish the work we started five years ago.”
He told the assembly the province had only begun and for them to get ready, because in the next five years the province would be going on a ride to make New Ireland the envy not only of the country, but the entire region.
Sir Julius established a New Ireland Election Sweep Team on Aug 24 to engage an independent investigator that would address all complaints and allegations of wrong-doing during the election.
He said a full investigation would make sure that the basic trust of the people in the electoral process was preserved.
Sir Julius said the continuous deliberate misinformation circulated to the public that had tainted leaders, parties, administration officials and the government must be extinguished.
“This is an opportune time to review previous outstanding cases, which have already been taken up by the fraud squad to compile charges against previous misappropriation, as outlined in the Rex Paki report tasked by the assembly in 2008.”
He told the assembly that with their support, the province was beginning a five-year journey that would complete and finally realise the promises of the Malagan Declaration.
“And in the next five years we will finally achieve that dream of New Ireland becoming a self-reliant, autonomous part of Papua New Guinea that is efficient, market oriented and internationally competitive.”
He said last weekend was the 37th birthday of the country and New Ireland would declare a new partnership in which “Government exists to serve the people, not to rule them and the people must be ready to take greater responsibilities to govern themselves”.
