FORMER Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane has thanked Prime Minister Peter O’Neill for leading by example in quitting alcohol.

Sir Paulias said O’Neill’s was setting a good example for the people.

He said yesterday Papua New Guinea would become a better place to live in if all people followed O’Neill’s example.

Sir Paulias said he became a teetotaler 30 years ago and that helped his health immensely.

He urged drinkers to try it out so that they could live longer and contribute effectively and positively to the development of the country.

He called on all leaders in the Islands region to follow the PM’s example.

O’Neill gave up alcohol to travel more around the country and ensure services were reaching the people.
