THE bank account opened at the beginning of this month for donations to assist injured Kumul Kurt Baptiste closes today, with about 98 per cent of the K10,160 raised so far coming from Sir Peter Ipatas.
Enga Governor Sir Peter gave K10,000 after hearing of the North Queensland rake’s season-ending injury suffered during the Kumuls’ loss to Samoa in the Pacific Test opener in Sydney, Australia, last month.
PNGRFL chief executive Reatau Rau said any amount, big or small, was greatly appreciated.
“The injury has ruled Kurt out from playing rugby league for his NRL club North Queensland Cowboys and the Kumuls for the next 12 months,” Rau said.
“The players are insured and all claims will mainly be for costs related to the injury.
“Our concern is his welfare. He risked his NRL contract when he chose to play for PNG and the injury happened while he had the Kumul jersey on. “As a nation, we are obliged to show our appreciation and support so he can get through this difficult period.”
Rau said there were many who supported the idea through social media before the account was opened.
“Those who pledged and supported Kurt through the social media can please deposit their monies into the account,” he said.
Rau said the account would be closed today with every toea sent to Baptiste.
“The SP Hunters arere travelling to play the Blackhawks this weekend in Townsville therefore it is an opportune time for coach Michael Marum and the team to present the monies to Kurt,” Rau said.
“Please let’s help our Kumul on the road to recovery.”
