Sir Puka looks to elevate education standards in Abau

ABAU MP Sir Puka Temu aims to build more Technical and Vocational Educational Training (Tvet) centres and elevate high and secondary schools in the next five years.
Sir Puka said he would focus on elevating two high schools – Inau and Magarida into secondary schools and Kupiano Secondary into school of excellence.
He said the Aroma High School, would become a girl’s school.
“It would be expanded as well due to high demand.
Sir Puka said Tvet centres would be built in each local level governments (starting with Amazon Bay next year.
He said it would improve education level and support teaching and learning for teachers and students in the district and provide opportunities for students and young people to venture into technical fields.
Sir Puka said education was key under Central Governor Rufina Peter’s structure of family support and integral development.
He said students who had the opportunity to further their studies were unable to due to the lack of school fee assistance from the provincial government.
“As a government we need to look into assisting those students that finished grade 12 willing to further their studies into tertiary institutions,” he said.
Hiri-Koiari MP Keith Iduhu said the province needed to open new schools.
He said it would release the burden from the provincial schools such as Laloki Secondary and Iarowari Secondary in his electorate.
Peter said in her maiden speech as chair of the provincial assembly that she would push for academic excellence in the province.
“Apart from pushing for students to produce better results in their grades 10 and 12 examinations, we need to upgrade teaching skills for teachers especially those who have been working very hard in remote Central,” Peter added.
Sir Puka said food shortage in Kupiano Secondary School was a management issue and will request the board for an audit report.
