THE 2012 national elections have had significant impact on activities of business houses in Lae, according to Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) president Alan McLay.
He said yesterday that small retailers and those in the informal economy experienced boom in sales throughout the election period.
Conversely, McLay said, major retailers such as hardware companies and manufacturers had less opportunity.
McLay said during the national elections period more people were travelling into Lae.
“More opportunity was present for these small retailers because of an influx of people into the city,” he said.“Not much opportunity was there for major retailers and wholesalers.”
McLay said having had minor inconveniences with business activities during the election period, the private sector was now focused on getting back into the normal business flow.
“In general, we commend the election authorities, police and defence personnel for seeing a relatively peaceful election period in Lae and Morobe province,” he said.
“We also extend our congratulations to the newly-elected leaders in the province, and hope they bring with them a period of advancement and prosperity in their terms of office.”
