A FOOTBALL tournament, backed by Lae Biscuit Company and Prima Smallgoods, has reached the heart of Aitape in West Sepik.
This is the last week of the fortnight-long tournament, according to the Lae-based tournament organiser, who returned to his home province for the festive season.
Back in Arop-Wauroian village in ward seven of Aitape West, Joel Ambrose is known for his association with reigning Digicel Cup champions Lae Tigers.

West Aitape local level government ward seven president Luciana Romme.

Part of the Tigers’ coaching staff, he thanked Ian and Adrian Chow for backing the tournament with prizes and apparel for tournament officials. Ambrose said the tournament would end tomorrow.
He thanked Aitape West local level government ward seven president Luciana Romme and his deputy, Pius Nasnas, organising the community for the tournament.
Tournament coordinator Eddie Romere said eight men’s and six women’s teams – representing Arop, Malol, Sisano and Warapu – were competing in the tournament.
Romere said the tournament was being used as an avenue to create awareness on the Coronavirus and gender equity among villagers.
Ambrose reminded participants about the 1998 tsunami that swept through the villages of Arop, Malol, Sisano and Warapu, wreaking havoc among communities.

Lae Biscuit Company and Prima Smallgoods are sponsors of the two-week tournament.

“It means a lot when it comes to festivities like Christmas, knowing very well it’s the season to unite and celebrate friendships,” he said.
“Many people have taken on the challenge to encourage hope among people here.
“I am just one person doing it in my own small way.”
Ambrose said memories of the tsunami would never to be erased.
“Even if it takes 23 years to find hope, so be it,” he said.
“But we must reach out and connect with the rest of Papua New Guinea.”
