Souths aim to re-sign Johnston

SOUTH Sydney coach Wayne Bennett insists the National Rugby League club are working towards re-signing Papua New Guinea flyer Alex Johnston to a new deal.
Off-contract Johnston made a strong case to be re-signed after bagging a hat-trick and recording 300 running metres in the Rabbitohs’ 32-24 comeback win over St George Illawarra on Thursday.
“He put himself in a position to get those tries with the intercepts so that was really good,” Bennett said of Johnston’s heroics.
“It’s a work in progress, regarding his contract.
“I don’t think any of us want him to leave the club but we have a salary cap,” he added.
“We’re trying to fit him in.”
But 25-year-old Johnston admitted that he was unlikely to stay at the Rabbitohs beyond his current deal, which expires at the end of the season.
“I’m a local junior and I’ve always maintained that I always wanted to stay at Souths,” Johnston said when asked about his contract situation.
“But at the moment, it’s not looking likely.
“I think there’s a lot of salary cap issue there.
“Hopefully, I put my best foot forward and some clubs get some offers through.” – Agencies

  • Souths through and through. You’ve always put your best foot forward for the bunnies, and even when the club lost some games, you’re 100% effort was always in the game. You deserve to fitted into the squad. If Souths don’t want you then they don’t deserve you.

  • AJ you have nothing more to proof. Where ever you go apart from the bunnies sky is the limit. Whether at wing or full back you have one goal, the try line box is your finish line.
We look forward to your inclusion for 2021 World Cup. God bless.

  • Go to Broncos, or they need you there. Fullback position will be yours and Boyd will move to centre. Case closed.
