CELEBRATIONS over the Barramundis’ T20 World Cup qualification continued on Friday with South Pacific Brewery holding a reception to congratulate the squad and Cricket Papua New Guinea (CPNG).
SP Brewery managing director Ed Weggemans congratulated the Barramundis on a successful campaign in Dubai and their subsequent qualification.
“The Barramundis success story is great news not only for CPNG but also for the country as a whole,” he said. “We are truly proud to be associated with you. SP brewery acknowledges CPNG’s contribution in sports and over the years they have been putting PNG on the world map through international tournaments.
“SP Brewery has been supporting sports in general for than 50 years and this particular sport for five years. Supporting PNG teams and sports are a great medium to unify people from all walks of life.”
CPNG chief executive Greg Campbell acknowledged SP for supporting cricket, which he said had impacted PNG greatly.
“It’s been a huge sponsorship to get to where we are, we can’t do it without our sponsors,” he said. “It’s about changing lives. We’re giving them (Barramundis) an opportunity and they do the right thing to further their finances, their careers and they’re seeing the world.
“Sport is the best thing to unite a country, it makes it better. We’re a powerful country and we’re going to get bigger and better. We’re not going to make up numbers. PNG are going to be a force to look out for at the World Cup next year.”
