Speaker certifies five Acts

Speaker Job Pomat has certified five Acts passed by Parliament.
They are:

  • Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Safety and Security (Amendment) Act 2018;
  • Emergency (General Powers) Act 2018;
  • Firearms (Amendment) Action 2018;
  • Mining (Ok Tedi Mine Continuation (Ninth Supplemental) Agreement (Amendment) Act 2018; and ,
  • Western, Enga, Southern Highlands and Hela provinces (WESH) Restoration Authority Act 2018.

The amendment to the Apec Safety and Security Act 2017 will now enable world leaders attending the Apec Summit in November to bring their full security details for their safety and protection.
The amended Firearms Bill was to regulate and control the licensing and use of firearms, with fines ranging between K10,000 and K20,000 and a prison term of 10 years.
Ok Tedi Mine Ltd will now be able to access the additional funding of US$35 million (K111m) kept under the financial assurance fund (FAF) to invest in the expansion of the mine and its operations.
The Western, Enga, Southern Highlands and Hela province Restoration Authority Act 2018 enabled a state-of-emergency declared on these provinces following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that devastated those areas in February.
