Split Bulolo

Letters

WITH the injection of K5 million by the Government, the Electoral Boundaries Commission is set to review electorate boundaries before next year’s national election.
The people of Bulolo are calling on the commission to consider splitting the electorate.
This is long overdue.
We need to revisit the electoral boundaries as the Bulolo population has grown since the last time the Government approved the boundary commission report in 1977.
This report has recommended having 89 open electorates and 20 provinces, according to the population at that time.
But now, the country’s population has increased and by law, we are supposed to have additional open electorates.
Bulolo needs to be divided due to its population density, the number of local level governments and other features.
Since 1977, the Electoral Boundaries Commission report submitted to successive governments were not considered and the last submission was in 2006, which was 15 years ago.
The Government has already set the precedent by creating Hela in 2012 before extracting oil and gas out of it.
Therefore, it should create another electorate in Bulolo before extracting gold and copper from the Wafi-Golpu mine in Mumeng.
