FORMER Papua New Guinea sprinter and Pacific Games gold medallist Nelson Stone has backed 100-metre national champion Leroy Kamau to usher in the next group of the country’s elite sprinters at the regional and international level.
Stone, who is head coach for the Nest Athletics team which competed in the national championships on the weekend, told The National that the performances from Kamau and other upcoming sprinters over the weekend showed potential that could match other countries in the region.
“For this championship, Leroy Kamau has been a standout for our team and he has a promising future ahead of him in athletics so PNG should be looking good in the sprints,” he said.
“The situation with Covid-19 this year has really disrupted everyone’s preparations and events but regardless of that, it’s really amazing to see the amount of talent that made it to Port Moresby for the national championships.
“This shows the commitment and hard work from every athlete that has attended and participated and I think athletics in PNG is looking at a good future going forward.”
Meanwhile, Stone congratulated his team on a successful performance.
