THE St John Ambulance Services has opened its 7-Mile station to help it carry out emergency duties at Jackson Airport in Port Moresby and the surrounding areas.
St John Ambulance Commissioner Mathew Cannon said the new station would improve the response time for emergency cases at the airport. The surrounding areas are 7-Mile, 8-Mile, 9-Mile and Sogeri.
He said 40 per cent of the ambulance service workload in the NCD was in the Moresby North-East electorate and airport.
“One ambulance will be stationed here 24 hours on shift times and will be designed to overlap with other ambulance in other station so that we have a greater coverage across the city,” Cannon said.
He said the airport was a prime position to attend to any emergencies at the domestic and international terminals.
Airport Police shift supervisor First Constable Lucy Bob said emergency work with St John Ambulance would help them assist in anything happening at the airport.
“We are lucky and privileged that they are close to us at the airport,” Bob said.
Cannon said the new station was the third in the city. They plan to have two more by next year.
