CONTINUOUS rain since the weekend has caused flooding in and around Port Moresby, with the public warned to be careful when moving around, an official says.
St John Ambulance chief executive officer Matt Cannon said people needed to stay away from flood waters during this wet period to avoid injury and infection.
He said the ambulance service had not been called to attend to injuries directly connected with the wet weather yet.
“We are reminding people never to swim or wash in flood waters,” he said.
“Flood water can contain germs such as typhoid, cholera and hepatitis A.
“There can be dangerous currents in flood water that can cause people to drawn.
“Never play in drains, flash-flooding can happen at any time.”
Those in the National Capital District, Central and East New Britain can call St John Ambulance on 111 for help in an emergency.
