POLICE have arrested a man for killing his six-month-old (baby) stepdaughter in Madang’s Kamba village on Oct 28, police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang says.
“The stepfather was with the baby when her mother went out,” he said.
“The mother returned at about 7pm and found her baby dead.
“She found bruises and scratches on the baby’s body.
“The mother and other villagers then reported the matter to the police and the witnesses and the mother were called in for statements.
“Police called in the suspect, arrested and charged him with manslaughter.
“The stepfather is now detained in a police lockup awaiting court appearance,.
“I reiterate my advice again to women or mothers who are remarrying or are remarried: we have received many reports in relation to crimes committed by stepfathers.
“Most of these offences are criminal, such as rape, assault and murder.
Acting Supt Rubiang said a man was also arrested for sexually assaulting his two step daughters on several occasions early this year.
“We also arrested a solider recently who assaulted his step daughter in Lae and now, we have arrested a man for the baby’s murder.
“Women who have daughters especially must make wise decisions when getting married a second time.
“These are reported cases that the police have. Some cases have gone unreported.”
