NATIONAL Pandemic Controller David Manning has advised social media users to stop circulating fake news about new cases of Covid-19 in Port Moresby.
He warned that spreading such false information was “detrimental to public safety” and was an offence under the cybercrime laws.
He confirmed that the total number of positive cases in PNG remained at 11 – the latest reported being on June 25.
The ninth case – an Australian Defence Force soldier – has returned home.
The 10th and 11th cases both in Port Moresby are still being monitored.
Manning, the Police Commissioner, said the rapid response team of the National Capital District continued to conduct case investigation and contact tracing.
It is being assisted by teams from the Health Department, PNG Defence Force, Australian Defence Force, St John Ambulance and the World Health Organisation.
Manning said any new cases would be confirmed by the National Control Centre.
“I urge people to get your information from reliable sources and not share anything from unverified platforms,” Manning said.
“As we continue to be vigilant against Covid-19, I urge you to also be mindful of the information you share.’’
Manning said the threat of the Covid-19 remained and urged everyone to continue observing public health measures.
“Anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms, fever, cough, sore throat, body ache or difficulty in breathing must stay at home and immediately call our toll free line 1800 200.”
