Stop keeping victims of sexual violence in cell: Philip

FEMALE victims of sexual violence should not be kept in the police sexual violence office in Daru but the family sexual violence office for their safety, a police official says.
Assistant Commissioner of Police – Border Command – Peter Philip said: “No female victims of family and sexual violence (FSV) should be kept in the police offices as this is unprofessional.”
Philip said he had received reports of policemen asking female victims for sexual favours and that was against the general conduct of police officers.
He said the family sexual office was for receiving complaints and it was not a safe house for female victims of violence.
“I have received reports from some female victims that policemen are asking them for sexual favours while they are being kept in the FSV office for comfort,” he said.
“That is not a comfort zone, you are causing many mysteries to the female victims as they have suffered a lot from their abusive partners.”
Philip said it was the duty of the policemen to lock up violent and abusive men in the cell.
Philip added that policemen who were involved in the act of asking female victims of FSV for sexual favours should be ashamed of themselves and stop the practice.
“I do not tolerate this act from policemen as this is unlawful and unethical,” he said.
