Stop unlawful raids by police

THE recent reports on police raids over civilians and residents in the capital city has escalated to a level where we begin to wonder whether such raids are sanctioned by those in control or command, or is that done as one pleases.

Is the Police force declaring war on its citizens?

Is that what they teach them at Bomana, that party of their duties and responsibilities is to terrorize their citizens?

I have a lot of respect for the new police commissioner Gari Baki and I know he will consider such acts and take actions.

May I suggest to him a measure to try to control these uncontrollable ‘raids’ by policemen in marked or unmarked vehicles who for example raid trade stores and steal beer and money from traders who have proper trading licences.

Let’s not forget that when you conduct a raid, your actions directly affects the very lives of civilians mainly families or mothers and children.

The Hanuabada incident is there for us to see and act.  What other examples do we want to witness first or learn from before taking constructive measures to address?

And can someone please remind the people who train police men and women at Bomana to ensure to teach the graduates that when you raid an area,  it does not mean that those persons living there have no constitutional protections or that they should be treated like animals or that it is ok to steal from them.

Just because a liquor trader is alleged to have breached a condition of his license, that does not give police the right to burn down his store or the right to raid or take away all his liquor or assault him or her or his family or even his animals.
