TAIWAN’s technical mission in Papua New Guinea will continue to assist the country in achieving its goal for food security and sustainability, says Taiwan Trade Mission representative Oliver Liao.
Liao said Taiwan has been a development partner for PNG over three decades and will continue to do so.
He was speaking during a farewell lunch for four recipients of scholarships who will be studying in different universities in Taiwan.
The four students are Si’eki Tefatu, Ladri Junior Kuli, Yapo Jeffery and Jacob Alfred.
Liao said Taiwan focused on education, health and agriculture.
“We are aware of the PNG Government’s goal to become self-reliant in terms of food supply,” he said.
“Rice, for example, is becoming a staple food in the country and our technical mission is committed to working with its
counterpart in Papua New Guinea for the country to achieve this goal.
“There’s a lot of potential in PNG.
“But to become self-reliant or even export rice to foreign destinations, we need to put more effort in it.
“It requires commitment from both the Government and private sectors.”
Liao said tourism was also another sector with potential to drive the PNG economy.
He said more than 60 students had benefited from the programme since its inception in 2010.
It will help students learn Taiwanese culture and social systems and ways of doing business.
