GOROKA MP Henry Ame has paid out over K550,000 in school fee assistance for students from his district attending tertiary institutions around Papua New Guinea.
Ame said he was committed to helping develop his district’s human resource.
He said out of the 42 institutions the district supported, the University of Goroka received the highest amount of K132,000; followed by the University of Technology with K90,000; Pacific Adventist University got K50,000; Highlands Regional College of Nursing received K47,000; Goroka Technical College got K36,000; and, the others receiving a share of the remaining funds.
Ame said the district office was also identifying Goroka students studying overseas and looking to support them starting next year.
He said K1 million would be made available from the education component of the district services improvement programme for school fee assistance.
“I am paying half for this year but next year onwards, fees for all Goroka students in tertiary institutions will be subsidised,” he said.
Ame said he wanted to support Goroka parents of children attending tertiary institutions as the lower grades were taken care of by the Government’s tuition fee free programme.
