Students having classes under a tree

Some students studying under the Flexible Open Distant Education (FODE) programme in Port Moresby are having classes under a tree.
Save our child and youth (Socay) education programme which enrols students ranging from grade 7 to 12 was moved to Bomana outside Port Moresby.
Principal Ludinina Bogea told The National that the school was evicted by the landlord last year.
Bogea said: “It was fortunate, that portion of land was given by Cardinal Sir John Ribat. They continued to have classes under the shades of rain trees.’’
She said they had two months of classes this year while waiting for the cardinal to decide on the development of land for the programme.
“The material for each subject was downloaded onto their phones and laptops which helped them access the notes during their private times,” Bogea said.
“The enrolment goes from primary literacy training which teaches the basics of reading and writing.
“Whoever passes the literacy tests goes on to enrol at different classes.”
