ABOUT 30 Bayune Secondary School students in Bulolo, Morobe were injured in a car accident last Friday when traveling from Bulolo town to the school.
The public motor vehicle (PMV) was packed with students who were picked up from Bulolo town and were to be dropped off at the school, when the PMV overturned at the Bayune Market at around 8 am.
According to reports, 11 students were critically injured, of which eight were transferred from the Bulolo hospital and were airlifted by Manalos Aviation on the same day to Lae for treatment at Angau General Hospital.
According to district health manager, Logan Yakam, there were no deaths reported and those that were transferred to Angau had internal injuries, a pelvic injury and a severe head concussion and would need further assessment at Angau.
Yakam said the rest of the students were assisted by medical teams from Hidden Valley and Dr John Ropen from Angau at the Bulolo hospital.
Some of those students were sent home while some were still at the hospital recovering from their injuries. The Bulolo development authority had observed a great show of professionalism and great team work from the Bulolo hospital staff together with PNG Forest Product and Hidden Valley mine medical staff, and members of Bulolo police who were also present to help victims and control the crowd.
Manalos Aviation chief executive officer, Jurgen Ruh, said they received a phone call from the Morobe Health Authority chairman, David Wissink, that there was an accident at Bulolo and there were multiple casualties.
“We didn’t wait for who would pay for the service before we helped the victims, our priority was to help and evacuate the severely injured to Angua,” Ruh said.
Manalos Aviation airlifted eight severely injured students to Angau and then airlifted Dr Ropen with medical supplies to Bulolo to help victims with minor injuries.
