THE Yer Education Foundation (YEF) opened its national office in Port Moresby on Wednesday to help students from across the country to further their education in the United States (US).
Foundation board member Michael Esop said: “This is the national office; any Papua New Guinean can come and enquire for help to study in the US.
“From 2018 to 2023, we have been helping our province, Southern Highlands, that is why our office is based in Mendi.”
He said the foundation strives to improve the overall quality of education in Papua New Guinea through partnerships with schools, and develop and promote education.
Chief executive officer Pake Kera said the foundation had assisted more than 10 students since its establishment in 2018 to undertake their studies in the US.
“All these students come from poor socioeconomic backgrounds and have been rejected by the education system in PNG,” he said.
“This effort also sought to enhance cross-cultural understanding, promote academic growth and empower students with valuable experiences and knowledge, so they can be competitive in this age of advanced technology.”
Meanwhile, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics adviser Jayson Kopeap commended the board for the initiative, saying: “Education is the key to the world, and this initiative will transform and give second chances to many children.”
