FOUR Papua New Guinea students have been reported safe after flooding killed at least 100 people in Papua province, Indonesia, where they are attending school.
Acting PNG Consul-General Simon Namis advised parents sending students to attend schools in Indonesia to inform the consulate when they enrol. “Two have returned to West Sepik while the others are safe with the school’s management. They survived the floods which swept through their school in Sentani,” he said.
Namis was clarifying reports that three Papua New Guinea students studying at the Adventist run Doyo Secondary School could be among the 82 people missing after the flood. “Parents of these students had enrolled them at the Doyo Baru Seventh-d Adventist Academy in Sentani but (failed to provide a) report to the Papua New Guinea Consulate Office in Jayapura on the particulars of their children so that the consulate will have a record of them studying there,” he said.
“In cases of emergencies such as this one, the information would be helpful in reaching them.”
PNG student Tony Wan who fled from the flooded area had advised the West Sepik provincial administration officers that he did not know where three of his colleagues were.
Wan is in Grade 11 while the others are in Grade 12.
Wan walked for three days from Sentani to Vanimo to alert the Sandaun officials.
