Students told: Don’t drink

STUDENTS drinking alcohol after their final examinations and causing trouble in public areas will be arrested and charged, says North Fly police commander Insp Silva Sika.
“We have a history of grade 12 students finishing their exams and drinking homebrew and causing public fights which led to death and students in police custody,” Sika said.
Sika said parents and guardians needed to monitor their children and make sure they go straight home after the exams because he did not want to see parents coming to the station complaining about missing children, or some ending up in hospital because of fights.
He advised students attending Kiunga Secondary, St Gabriel High, Ningerum High, Tabubil Secondary and Ayambak Secondary to go home after completing their final papers.
He said parents who wished to celebrate after their children’s graduation needed to do so at home.
“We will not hesitate to arrest and lock them in the cell if they are caught causing trouble,” he said.
Sika called on the public to report any instances of students drunk and being disorderly in public.
Meanwhile, students in Jiwaka have also being warned by police not to get drunk after their final exams.
Jiwaka police commander Gideon Kauke said his men would be on alert for any disturbance or disorderly conduct by students.
He said any student caught misbehaving in public or causing a nuisance would be arrested.
“I am asking school managements to restrict their students and send them home after their exams,” Kauke said.
“If they want to celebrate they can do it at home.”
Kauke also appealed to students to act responsibly.
