NATIONAL advanced diploma students of Port Moresby Technical College have undergone their second major project of the year which gave them the opportunity to produce power by creating a mini prototype hydro generator at the college.
Port Moresby Technical College aims to produce students with improved capacity to design and develop power solutions for the country and industry.
In 2017, they introduced national certificate three in electrical; in 2018, they introduced national certificate three in electronics; in 2019, they pushed for the inclusion of diploma programme in electrical, and, in 2020, they introduced diploma programmes for electronics.
This year is the first time that the college has introduced the national advanced diploma for electrical engineering.
According to the electrical engineering head of department Froilan Derit, this was the first time the advanced diploma students did a prototype based on their project proposal from last year while in diploma programme.
He said the recent practical presentation of the mini prototype hydro generator done by the advanced diploma students from the electrical engineering department was conducted without supervision.
Derit said his students had applied what they had learned and were able to create a mini hydro system based on their proposal.
He said all safety precautions and protocols were maintained and the group was able to construct a system which produced power.
The college is using the curriculum that is focused on competency-based training and assessment approved and accredited by the Department of Education.
The college’s curriculum learning outcomes also follows the Australian and New Zealand standard further enhancing the students’ qualifications.
