A COURT has placed two students on a two-year good behaviour bond for their involvement in the kidnapping for ransom of workers at a logging camp, “because they ended up with the wrong people”.
Daru District Court Magistrate Gami Madu imposed the penalty on Danny Kuse, 20, of Yuke village in Balimo, Western and Kwata Wapilipi, 20, of Apa village, Balimo, Western.
He said the two students, charged with being in possession of ammunition, had left school to find work at a plywood mill, and two logging camps.
“Since that they were unsuccessful in getting employed, they ended up with the wrong people,” he said.
Kuse and Wapilipi, from Middle Fly District, are in Grade 10 and Grade 12 respectively at the Awaba Secondary School.
Magistrate Madu said the two withdrew from school because of the non-payment of school fees. They ended up with a gang involved in drugs-for-guns smuggling, and the kidnapping of workers at logging sites. If they breach the two-year good behaviour bond, they will each pay a fine of K1,000 in default one year in jail. Magistrate Madu meted out harsher penalties on other gang members.
Barry Kosa Baiya, 37, of Bamusti village in Balimo, Eddie Magaiya, 45, of Saweta village in Balimo, and Wamil Bok, 54, of Kerowill village in Banz, Jiwaka were fined K1,000 each in default a year in prison.

  • So what happened to the other gang members from Hela and Southern Highlands?

  • So why judge let students go free? Offense was already committed.Everyone under same umbrella and that PNG law.

  • kidnapping and ransom is a lucrative business for armed gangs in SE Asia. The courts may have some reason to show leniency to the accused. Its a terrorist act!

  • Hope this lazy bone from Jiwaka from Kerowill the very own son of current North Waghi MP should go back home and put his blessed ten fingers into the fertile soil of Waghi valley and should be blessed rather than joining illegal activities. What a shame???
