Village scheme targeting better homes

VILLAGERS in the Yangoru-Saussia district of East Sepik have been encouraged to build permanent homes and do away with bush-material ones they have been using for ages.
MP Richard Maru launched a village housing scheme last month with the district providing roofing irons to families.
One family at Munji in the Sausso local level government and 12 families at Baimuru, East Yangoru Local Level Government have benefitted so far.
“The district village housing scheme is to incentivise our people to replace bush-material dwelling places with modern permanent homes to improve their living standards,” he said.
He said the district planned to see all families living in permanent homes by 2030.
It also wants the people to have an improved water, hygiene and sanitation system, electricity and television.
It hopes to see better educational outcomes for children because they have better places to study.
The district will only provide the roofing iron to families who have put up the house frames. He urged people to pursue activities which will generate income for them.
“Economic activities like cocoa, vanilla, chicken outgrower programme and informal markets should provide the financial means for people to upgrade their houses to permanent ones,” he said.
He advised the wards to form committees and transform their traditional villages into modern ones.

  • People in many districts in Iji-vitari in Northern are still waiting for their iron sheets promised by MP Hon.Richard Masere. Mean while, rumour has it that some who already received iron sheets are reselling at lower prices for fast income.
