Students warned about unregistered college

Education authorities in West New Britain have warned grade 12 students not to enrol at the Carl Teachers’ College in Kimbe because it has not yet received government approval.
Guidance officer Norman Manda when asked about the status of Carl Teachers’ College, said the college had not yet been recognised the Education Department.
“Students who wish to enrol at Carl Teachers’ College are wasting their time and their parents’ money,” he said.
“I don’t know how they will find employment in the public and private schools.”
Manda said that it was the responsibility of the Government to train teachers in approved and recognised colleges and universities.
“Teacher training is the responsibility of the Government and they are the ones that will train teachers in colleges or universities to seek employment in public or private schools.”
Manda said that Carl Teachers’ College did not meet the criteria or required standards to train primary school teachers.
Carl Teachers’ College director and owner Andrew Carl said the college was in the process of registering with the Department of Education and the Department of Higher Education, Research Science and Technology.
“You achieve nothing if you have to wait for the approval from the national education department, you have to start small somewhere,” Carl said when asked if they can wait until the college has been registered.
He said the college used the nationally-approved curriculum for teacher training in the country.
Last year 16 students graduated from the college.
Carl said that once the college was fully registered they would formally graduate those students with a diploma in primary teaching.
The college has been enrolling about 90 students yearly for the past four years.
It employs eight teachers.
