The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) held its orientation yesterday to welcome its first-year students.
The new students were welcomed inside at Duncanson Hall by members of the university council and administration staff.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Ora Renagi encouraged the new students to be committed to their studies so they could contribute to the nation’s development.
“You are sitting at the verge of an opportunity to transform your life through some professional and productive knowledge, to contribute to the development of this nation,” Renagi said.
“It is my responsibility, and that of the heads of each of your departments, and my colleagues in management to ensure that you are studying and developing those skills and the character to be the person that you were meant to be.” He challenged students to take the opportunity, grab it with both hands and focus on their studies and learn as much as they could in their courses.
He also challenged the students to develop new skills.
Meanwhile, Sir Nagora Bogan, who spoke on behalf of acting Chancellor Jean Kekedo, called on students to respect inclusiveness and diversity and learn to inter-relate with other people.
“Do things that will uplift you and help humankind to grow and develop in this world,” he said.
“Life is short. Time is short. But nothing is impossible in life.
“All of you are different, but the fundamentals are the same.”
Registrations for new students start this week.
Students who will live on campus will start moving in after registration at their respective departments.
