WEST Sepik students at the University of Papua New Guinea have been told to acknowledge the sponsors of their tertiary fees by successfully completing their studies.

The message was relayed to them by Professor Kenneth Sumbuk, the pro-vice chancellor (policy and development) at the university during the presentation of of a K20,000 cheque by Telefomin MP Solan Mirisim to the Sandaun Students Association.

Mirisim also gave K95,000 to UPNG as tertiary fees for 48 Telefomin students at the university.

The money were from the Telefomin district funds sourced from its education sector appropriations.

“It is an important occasion,” Sumbuk told students and university officials.

“We are receiving an important contribution. It is important that it must not be taken lightly.”

Sumbuk said the K20,000 was a huge contribution.

“That’s a lot of money for a student association. Use it wisely for a good cause,” he said.

“This money could be used to assist people in rural areas. That is why any funding we receive from a member or government must be appreciated.”

UPNG bursar Norah Sosoro said they would confirm with records any outstanding fees for the Telefomin students.

Each Telefomin student is expected to be allocated K2,000 each.

Mirisim said the subsidy would also cater for students who enrolled mid-year. If a continuing student has any available credits, they would be carried forward to the next academic year.

Diddley Aheng, the Sandaun Students Association president, has urged the 117 students from West Sepik to appreciate the financial contributions and complete their studies with “flying colours”.
